Publication date: 2014
Format: Hardback, 1 volume
Pages: 1280 pp.
Product Dimensions: 29.50 cm x 23.50 cm
Country of Origin: United States

Constantly expanding, ASHP’s Handbook on Injectable Drugs, 18th Edition™, is now newly updated with the latest information.
With its 37-year track record for covering vast amounts of data with precise, accurate detail, nothing else comes close for compatibility, stability, storage, and preparation of parenteral drugs.

The 18th edition brings together information on parenteral drugs available in the United States and in other countries in 338 drug monographs. About 50% of the monographs have been revised and updated for this edition to include new drugs, expanded and updated stability and compatibility information, more specific referencing of manufacturer information, and other enhancements.

While primary, peer-reviewed literature remains a major source of compatibility and stability information, beginning with this edition ongoing efforts have been initiated to provide increased specificity of references to the pharmaceutics research of drug manufacturers.  Other relevant information and pertinent study details supplied by corresponding authors of the published literature also have been incorporated into this edition.

Drug monographs are organized alphabetically by non-proprietary name. The names of the drugs follow the style of the USP Dictionary of Drug Names. American Hospital Formulary Service Drug Information reference codes are conveniently located at the top of each monograph to refer the reader to more detailed information. The monographs are divided into the following subheadings; products, administration, stability, compatibility and other information. The tables of compatibility for the subject drug in infusion solutions and with other drugs in admixtures, syringes and during simultaneous administration through manifolds and Y-sites are arranged by category.

The section on “products’ lists the sizes, strengths, volumes and pharmaceutical forms along with the other components of the formulation and instructions for reconstitution. The pH ant he osmotic value of the resultant solutions are also presented along with miscellaneous information such as sodium content.

Purpose: The book includes drug monographs for each drug and compares all the medications within each class. Chapters are organized based on therapeutic uses for each medication. This reference is key for comparing similar drugs in terms of therapy, yet it allows for differentiation based on an individual patient's medical history. It is designed to allow readers to compare and contrast medications and reach a conclusion about which drug should be used in a individual patient cases. It is inclusive, comprehensive, and up to date. This allows for timely reference and provides current and relevant data.
Audience: All healthcare practitioners, including pharmacists, physicians, and nurse practitioners, will find this reference helpful in their daily prescribing practices. In situations where formularies are of relevance, this reference could be used to compare agents on the market to make appropriate and informed therapeutic decisions.
Features: The 13 chapters are organized by therapeutic class allowing for comparison between each agent. Each chapter is then organized into subgroups via the mini-index at the beginning of each chapter. The index at the end of the book is also easy to use, and it includes disease states and brand/generic drug names. The drug information is presented in a package-insert manner, including all published monograph information. Charts within the different therapeutic areas provide more concise comparisons between different drugs. Off-label recommendations are presented with ratings of therapeutic evidence. Although this reference is great for comparison, it may not be ideal for searching for general drug information responses. Its inclusiveness and comprehensiveness may make it difficult to find a specific answer for a drug information question. However, when comparing or contrasting options within a therapeutic class, this remains the gold standard.
Assessment: For comparing multiple drugs within a therapeutic class, this is the preferred resource; indeed, it is the only one in pharmacy to accomplish this task. It allows users to successfully recommend an agent based on specific patient cases or for appropriate substitution within a class based on adverse effects, copay or formulary considerations.
